The letters are concerned with the continued purchasing of the roughly 180 sq. miles surrounding Point Conception on the California Coast.
The area, already rich in history, inhabited by the Chumash for nine or ten thousand years, claimed by the Mission System in the very late 18th century, and then secularized by the Mexican and Mexican/Californian governments into land grants of private property.
The Gold Rush and the annexation of California into the United States ignited the spirits of capital and entrepreneurship within the economic caldren of San Francisco, reinventing, among other things, land use and agriculture throughout the state. These letters and the actions animating them are windows into a transition of mind.
